What are VoIP calls and how do they work?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) calls are a free service that enables you to make calls via a Wi-Fi connection or mobile data. As they do not generate an additional cost in your internet tariff, they are ideal for making calls from anywhere even from abroad, so they enable considerable savings and instant assistance from anywhere.

VoIP calls operate in a very similar way to conventional phone calls, the only difference is that they do not need an aerial or telephone network to work. When starting the call two channels are created, one that emits your voice and another that receives the voice of the person spoken to. The electronic device picks up the voice and digitalises it to convert it into digital data that is sent from one device to another, once this data reaches its destination, VoIP technology is responsible for interpreting it.

How to make a VoIP call

To make a VoIP call you only need to have a mobile or landline phone, a computer or a tablet with a microphone and authorise its use.

One recommendation we make is to consider is to review your internet coverage. If coverage is not stable, the call may lose quality and be cut off. To avoid line problems, it is advisable to have the latest available version of your usual browser installed, whether that be Chrome, Safari or Firefox.

Finally, if you use headphones with a built-in microphone this can help make the sound clearer, as this will avoid ambient noises that may interfere with the call.
